چکیده

This paper introduces valency as an adaptive mechanism. It has been previously hypothesised that valency assesses the agent’s behavioural patterns and guides adaptation. However, we argue that it acts furthermore as a mechanism guiding the interaction between learning and evolution. Unlike previous studies, we hypothesise that behaviour related information must be underspecified in the genes and that the resulting behavioural patterns are further specified via developmental learning. This hypothesis has been extensively tested in a set of static and dynamic scenarios, aiming to demonstrate the necessity of valency and of both learning and evolution as complementary processes for adapting to the environment.

Valency for Adaptive Homeostatic Agents: Relating Evolution and Learning

This paper introduces a novel study on the sense of valency as a vital process for achieving adaptation in agents through evolution and developmental learning. Unlike previous studies, we hypothesise that behaviour-related information must be underspecified in the genes and that additional mechanisms such as valency modulate final behavioural responses. These processes endow the agent with the ...

An annotation scheme for Persian based on Autonomous Phrases Theory and Universal Dependencies

A treebank is a corpus with linguistic annotations above the level of the parts of speech. During the first half of the present decade, three treebanks have been developed for Persian either originally or subsequently based on dependency grammar: Persian Treebank (PerTreeBank), Persian Syntactic Dependency Treebank, and Uppsala Persian Dependency Treebank (UPDT). The syntactic analysis of a sen...

Sensorless Indirect Field Oriented Control of Single-sided Linear Induction Motor With a Novel Sliding Mode MRAS Speed Estimator

This paper proposes a new sliding mode control (SMC)  based model reference adaptive system (MRAS) for sensorless indirect field oriented control (IFOC) of a single-sided linear induction motor (SLIM). The operation of MRAS speed estimators dramatically depends on adaptation mechanism. Fixed-gain PI controller is conventionally used for this purpose which may fail to estimate the speed correctl...

Evolving A Sense Of Valency

One way in which organisms learn is by feelings of pleasure and pain, which can be said to be equivalent to the reward function commonly used in computational applications of reinforcement learning. It is likely that pleasure and pain have become associated with good and bad actions through evolution, and similarly one might wish to investigate if it is possible to evolve the reward function us...

On the Predicate-Argument Structure: Internal and Absorbing Scope

Valency filling is considered a major mechanism for constructing the semantic structure of the sentence from semantic structures of words. This approach requires a broader view of valency and actant, covering all kinds of actant-bearing words and all types of valency filling. We introduce the concept of scope as a generalization of actant: it is any fragment of a Syntactic (SyntScope) or Semant...
